The Khomas and Oshana regions have outlined investments in sports infrastructure and youth development, with regional leaders highlighting projects aimed at strengthening grassroots sport and creating opportunities for young athletes.
The updates formed part of their respective State of the Region Addresses.
In Oshana, Governor Honi Alugodhi Iipinge said the government has begun implementing the Constituency Sports Facilities Programme, with new facilities planned for Eheke and Onamutai.
He said the investment will improve sports infrastructure while creating opportunities for local businesses and young people.
"In line with Government's commitment to youth empowerment and talent development, implementation of the Constituency Sports Facilities Programme commenced. The first facilities in Oshana Region are being developed at Eheke and Onamutai, with a budget allocation of N$10 million per facility. The programme will create opportunities for local contractors and SMEs while providing modern sporting infrastructure to support youth development, recreation and community engagement."
The governor also highlighted improvements in regional sports performance, saying investment in youth development programmes continues to deliver results.
"During the year under review, Oshana Region engaged over 500 athletes and 65 officials through athletics programmes involving 80 schools. The Region's performance improved significantly, moving from 11th position nationally in 2025 to 4th position in 2026. Furthermore, 30 athletes qualified for the Region 5 Youth Games, contributing to Namibia's second-place finish."SB-OUT
Meanwhile, Khomas Governor Sam Nujoma said the region is making progress in expanding sports infrastructure as part of the government's commitment to youth empowerment.
He highlighted plans for new constituency sports facilities, as well as continued work on the rehabilitation of the Independence Stadium.
"I am pleased to report that in Khomas Region, as part of the initial phase, sports facilities will be built at A. Shipena Secondary School in the John Pandeni Constituency and Havana High School in the Moses Garoeb Constituency. Moreover, the rehabilitation of the Independence Stadium continues to advance as one of Government's flagship sport infrastructure undertakings, restoring our nation's capacity to host international competition on home soil."
Nujoma also pointed to the region's sporting achievements, including success at the National School Athletics Championships and performances in youth competitions.
"The Khomas Regional Team was crowned overall winner of the 2026 National School Athletics Championships, with roughly six in every ten athletes on the national team drawn from this very Region. Our Under-19 netball side finished runner-up at the 2026 Newspaper Cup, while our regional football team advanced to the quarter-finals of the same competition."
The two governors said continued investment in infrastructure, youth programmes, and grassroots development remains key to strengthening sport and creating opportunities for future generations.
