The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has pledged support for the Namibia National Solidarity Campaign for Cuba, an initiative aimed at mobilising funds to purchase medical supplies and solar panels.

The broadcaster made the announcement during a meeting with the committee members.

Cuba's medical and power sectors are facing a severe, increasing crisis driven by fuel shortages and tightened United States sanctions.

Daily blackouts are experienced, crippling hospitals and paralysing essential infrastructure.

Therefore, the Namibian solidarity campaign honours the historic ties between the two countries, rooted in bloodshed.

NBC will support the campaign by providing airtime across all its platforms, including an SMS competition aimed at raising funds for the initiative.

"Namibia is also a child of solidarity, as you often say. At NBC, we have various platforms that we can effectively utilise. We can communicate this message in multiple languages," stated NBC Director-General Menesia Muinjo. "We will find a way to convey the same message of support for our brothers and sisters there, as well as for all the families in need, just as they assisted us when we were in need. I believe we are prepared and fully committed to this initiative. I can confirm our readiness."

The Deputy Chairperson of the National Solidarity Committee with Cuba, Tuliameni Kalomoh, reminded Namibians of Cuba's enduring support during the country's liberation struggle.

He noted that sixteen Cuban soldiers were killed and more than seventy wounded during the Cassinga attack, while hundreds of Cassinga survivors were taken to Cuba, where they received education and humanitarian support.

The seasoned diplomat added that after independence, Cuba continued assisting Namibia through technical cooperation and skills development to support the country's socio-economic development.

"I believe we have a moral obligation as a people to mobilise not only at the elite level but also at the grassroots level to get involved. To really express our enduring gratitude to the people of Cuba. One, this is a non-political movement."

The campaign is expected to end in August.
