The Ninth National Information and Communication Technology Summit has received a financial boost of over N$1.2 million ahead of its anticipated launch.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of ICT, Emma Theofelus, noted that the summit will focus on how digital transformation can translate into tangible economic opportunities.

Theofelus says technology should not be viewed as an end in itself but as a tool to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

Namibia, Theofelus says, must move beyond digital literacy and invest in skills such as software development, data management, cybersecurity, innovation and digital entrepreneurship.

She notes that the country's young population presents an opportunity to develop homegrown digital solutions that could compete beyond Namibia's borders.

"Technology itself is not a destination; it is a lever. The real measure of our digital transformation is what changes in the life of an ordinary Namibian."

Theofelus says government alone cannot build the digital economy, calling for stronger partnerships between government, the private sector, universities and financial institutions.

She has challenged stakeholders to bring about practical ideas, investment proposals, skills-development initiatives and solutions to national challenges.

"We should be creating an environment where Namibians build, develop, and export digital solutions. Of course, it's not a secret we are a small economy; we're a small population, but technology has shown us a solution can travel beyond the traditional borders."

ICT Deputy Minister Wenzel Kavaka acknowledged that the country is witnessing rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, digital platforms, cloud technologies and data analytics.

"Together we can build a digital environment that is both dynamic and secure, empowering citizens and businesses alike."

The ICT Ministry's Executive Director Linda Aipinge-Nakale emphasised the need for a decentralised digital transformation.

"Technology is no longer a luxury. Over five days in Ongwediva, discussions will go beyond infrastructure and software. We will focus on people and answer on how ICT can create jobs, empower the youth and uplift communities from poverty."

This year's summit will be held under the theme "Harnessing ICT for Inclusive Growth: Digital Pathways to Reduce Unemployment and Eradicate Poverty".
