Young Namibians have been encouraged to play a greater role in driving Namibia's sustainable development, with this year's Sustainable Development Awards focusing on youth empowerment.
Organised by the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) and the Sustainable Development Advisory Council, the fifth edition of the awards was held under the theme "Empowering Namibian Youth for a Sustainable Future".
Five hundred and 90 entries were received, with each award category carrying a N$20,000 cash prize.
The categories are Youth Action for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Schools, Women and Environment, Green Financial Services and Institutions, Sustainable Journalism and Research and Development in the field of sustainable development.
Environment, Forestry and Tourism Minister Indileni Daniel said the growing number of entries shows that sustainability is increasingly being translated into practical action.
“We celebrate more than excellence. We celebrate action, innovation, and responsibility. Above all, we celebrate Namibian(s) who have chosen not merely to speak about sustainable development but to make it happen.”
Sustainable development cannot be achieved by government alone, Daniel underscored, calling on communities, businesses, researchers, development partners and young people to take ownership.
Vice President Lucia Witbooi highlighted that the focus on youth is particularly important, given that about 71% of Namibia’s population is under the age of 35.
Witbooi said emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, green hydrogen and climate finance present opportunities that young Namibians should be equipped to take advantage of.
“Sustainability should not be viewed simply as an environmental obligation. Rather, it should be understood as an opportunity to broaden our economy, create jobs, and foster innovation and inclusion. Namibia has significant potential in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, conservation, tourism, digital services, and other emerging green industries.”
EIF Chief Executive Officer Benedict Libanda said the awards provide visibility to individuals and organisations already developing solutions for Namibia.
“You are helping us create visibility for people who are building solutions for our country. Through this kind of support, you are helping us spread the message and amplify their work.”
The organisers explained that the awards promote sustainable best practices and encourage wider adoption of environmentally responsible and socially inclusive approaches across Namibia.
