Official Opposition Leader Immanuel Nashinge questioned the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security (MHAISS) about the budget implications, eligibility criteria, stakeholder consultations and implementation timeline for the new five-year visa for investors.
Minister Lucia Iipumbu explained that the initiative took effect on the first of September under the Immigration Control Act, adding that it requires no significant additional budget beyond the cost for printing application forms.
"The Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPBD) is responsible for confirming the investor status in assessing the economic and potential impact of the investment together with the ministry responsible for investment. Applicants do not initially submit their application to the ministry but rather via NIPDB, where the assessment is conducted. The final immigration consideration remains our responsibility. And this is done through the Immigration Selective Board, which sits on a weekly basis every Tuesday. At the present moment, there is no minimum investment threshold formally prescribed under this initiative."
