Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform Inge Zaamwani says the government has availed N$70 million to the Agronomic Board of Namibia to purchase surplus maize from local farmers following a good harvest.

She explained that N$40 million was allocated by the government, while the board had secured an additional N$30 million through a revolving fund arrangement.

The minister was responding to a concern raised by NDP Leader Lukato Lukato regarding farmers struggling to find buyers for their produce.

The minister revealed that N$120 million is needed to purchase the surplus grain, leaving a shortfall of 50 million dollars.

"We still are looking for N$50 million to be able to procure all the grains that are available. And therefore, I think we have done great work. How much was produced for the season? 1,027 tonnes out of the estimated 1,172 of mahongo grains were procured in the Zambezi region."

She further commended farmers across the country for seizing the opportunity presented by rainfall during the previous crop season through their dedication, resilience and hard work.
