Minister of Finance Erica Shafudah says the Namibia Revenue Agency (NAMRA) must ensure that debt recovery from employees does not leave them with less than the legally protected portion of their salaries.
She was responding to Swanu Leader, Evilastus Kaaronda, who questioned NAMRA's debt recovery practices and their impact on workers.
"Our revenue collection methods and strategies should not be at the expense of human life or of our employees. And that is very clear to all of us. So as to NAMRA. In fact, what I have a device NAMRA to do is that when we owe NAMRA, we should be engaged. It should not be an atmosphere of anonymity but a friendly one because we do not want to chase away our taxpayers. Therefore, arrangements have to be made on how the deductions should be made so that then they start a mutual understanding between the collector and the taxpayer."
