The fourth Junior National Council has concluded its first session this week.

The Junior National Council MPs have recommended that schools establish early warning and intervention systems to identify learners at risk of dropping out and provide appropriate academic and psychosocial support.

The Founder of the Holding Hope Mental Practice, Hileni Njaba, has raised concerns over the limited mental health facilities, particularly those that can accommodate children.

The Junior National Council MPs are calling on the government to build stronger referral and follow-up systems for when a child reaches out for help to ensure that learners receive continuous care.

Delivering a motivational address at the Junior National Council, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Phillipus Katamelo, said that the motion on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is not merely a service delivery issue but is fundamental to children's rights, education, health, and equality.

MPs from the Junior National Council (JNC) have attributed school dropouts to teenage pregnancies, substance abuse, cultural norms, and economic household challenges.

Universal access does not mean that every school must receive exactly the same infrastructure but that every child should receive an equivalent standard of safe, reliable and dignified service.

The newly-elected Chairperson of the Junior National Council, Fritz Hangue, has expressed gratitue to the government for providing the platform and giving the youth the opportunity to voice their opinions on how everyday challenges should be addressed.

Vice Chairperson of the National Council, Emma Muteka, has warned young MPs against mistaking popularity on social media for real leadership or impact.

She said their influence must be used responsibly.

The Junior National Council has officially opened its 1st session of its 4th term, which also included the election of new leadership.

The positions filled with new members are Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip.
