Nine years ago, on the 26th of April, then Swanu MP Usutuaije Maamberua rose in the National Assembly to propose a historic motion to declare the 28th of May as National Genocide Remembrance Day. 

As Namibia approaches Genocide Remembrance Day on 28 May, former SWANU President and retired Member of Parliament Usutuaije Maamberua reflects on the roots of the historic day.

He first tabled the motion in 2016.

The ongoing infighting in SWANU of Namibia has taken another turn as the party's 8ste Laan branch has proceeded to hold congress on its own. 

Retired SWANU MP Usutuaije Maamberua has reiterated the call to enact a Genocide Memory Law to recognize the 1904-1908 genocide victims formally.

Affected communities of the 1904-1908 genocide committed by German forces against the Nama, Ovaherero, and Ovambanderu people have called for the speedy promulgation of the National Genocide Remembrance Day.

This call was made during the commemoration in the capital today.
