47 International University of Management (IUM) nursing and midwifery graduates took the oath to uphold ethics in their profession at the IUM Dorado Main Campus in Windhoek.

The custom of nurses taking the Nightingale Pledge dates back to the early 20th century and is inspired by English social reformer Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of modern nursing.

Before taking the pledge, the graduates were reminded of the meaning behind the lamp in the pledge of service.

As part of the Florence Nightingale Pledge, the graduates pledged not to allow social, economic, political, religious or cultural differences to influence the care they will render to clients, family and the community at large.

Speaking at the occasion, the founder and council chair of IUM, David Namwandi, emphasised the crucial role nurses play in the healthcare system and therefore says they should be treated with respect and honour at all times.
