The Namibian Police Force is advising the public to exercise extreme caution when making fires at home or handling flammable products.

This warning comes in response to a rise in fire incidents reported in recent months.

In an official statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, the police emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly during evening hours when temperatures drop.

Recent incidents include a shack fire on July 1 that spread to 20 dwellings.

In Onethindi Village, a tragic fire incident on

Tuesday resulted in one death, allegedly involving a 39-year-old man whose clothes caught fire while he was warming food in the kitchen.

Additionally, a 91-year-old woman, Victoria Nekongo, perished in a fire that engulfed her room in Omuntele Village, Oshikoto Region, on June 16.

Given the increasing number of such incidents, police strongly discourage minors from handling fires.

Children should be closely supervised around fires and candles, especially in environments where intoxicating substances are present.

Lastly, the public is warned against illegal electricity cable connections, which pose significant risks.
