President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says the late Lazarus !Guiteb’s commitment to the struggle against apartheid marks him as one of the stalwarts of Namibia’s internal resistance.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah paid tribute to the late !Guiteb, who died on Tuesday, July 15, aged 83.

She described him as a dedicated freedom fighter, adding that he made enormous sacrifices for the liberation of Namibia.

“Due to his dedication and commitment to the liberation struggle, Comrade !Guiteb was incarcerated on the notorious Robben Island and endured harsh treatment alongside fellow comrades such as Herman Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo, Eliaser Tuhadeleni, and others,” said Nandi-Ndaitwah.

The President offered condolences to the family of the veteran, to comrades, and to all those touched by his work and dedication.

Nandi-Ndaitwah added, “As we honour his memory, we celebrate a life spent in pursuit of justice, unity, and progress for all Namibians.”

The late !Guiteb, known by his combat name “Great Lion,” was a trained PLAN commissar and revered for his absolute bravery.

He was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1977 to 1984.
