The Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs is actively conducting outreach programmes across the Oshikoto Region to engage war veterans and others involved in the national liberation struggle.

The initiative aims to educate veterans about the various benefits they are eligible for, ensuring they are well-informed about the support available.

Asser Nampala, community liaison officer from the Veteran Affairs Department in Omuthiya, highlighted that veterans in Namibia enjoy a range of benefits provided by the government. These benefits include counselling services and medical assistance, which are extended when government hospitals are unable to provide specialised healthcare.

Furthermore, Nampala highlighted that the government has constructed 49 houses in the Oshikoto region specifically for veterans, primarily targeting those who are homeless.

This initiative reflects the government's effort to improve the living conditions of veterans and ensure they have a place to call home. In addition to housing, veterans are also eligible for resettlement farming programmes, although there are specific requirements for qualifying.

The government also offers funeral grants to support the families of deceased veterans, acknowledging their service and sacrifice.

The Oshikoto Region has identified 77 burial sites of Namibian freedom fighters and combatants during a historical recognition exercise conducted in collaboration with the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) in the 2017/2018 fiscal year. These sites serve as important memorials, honouring the courage and contributions of those who fought for Namibia's independence.
