The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) officially handed over the construction site of 172 houses in Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region.

The project is worth N$14.2 million.

In December last year, the NHE held a groundbreaking ceremony for the design phase in Nkurenkuru's Extension 3, and the site was handed over to S. Shikongo Construction Company for an eight-month construction period.

The Nkurenkuru Town Council availed land for the construction of 100 erven, and the NHE availed an additional 72 erven.

Indileni Iipinge, NHE Manager for Infrastructure Development, explained, "This project, therefore, includes the realignment and construction of municipal services to accommodate the increased number of erven. This work is essential to ensure that the electrical, water, and sewer systems are properly adjusted or upgraded to meet the new layout and the higher demand for services in Extension 3."

NHE also plans to start constructing 50 houses in April, midway through the servicing phase, to prevent vandalism and security issues.

Additionally, it is acquiring 83 serviced plots in Nkurenkuru Extension 6.

These projects will deliver 255 housing units for low-income families over the next 20 months.

"We want young people, teachers, police, and nurses so that they can move away from their parents' house to own their own house. So this is a very affordable house. So we want everyone to own a house which is an affordable price. So with this moment," said Dr. Engelius Liveve, the Chairperson for the Nkurekuru Town Council Management Committee.

Dr. Liveve further urged the contractor to consider locals for employment.

S.Shikongo Construction's site agent, Helvi Shilumbu, assured NHE and the local authority to expect quality and timely delivery.

NHE also officially handed over the construction site for 54 houses at Ehenye, Extension 12, at Oshakati.

The project is valued at N$15.6 million and is scheduled to be completed within five months.
