As his tenure at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation draws to a close, Director General Stanley Similo urged staff members to remain united and to embrace change as the organisation moves forward.
"The only constant thing in life is change. Change will always be there, and change is a thing we must accept, and leaving the nbc, I believe that I am leaving an entity for the next DG who will find something that is working very well; it will be for that individual to push forward," stated Similo.
He also urged the staff to always uphold their responsibility in society, which is keeping the nation informed, educated and entertained at all times.
"So for the nbc staff as a team, keep your focus because your being here is to inform the Namibian people irrespective of their race or political parties, irrespective of any person – that is our job. We must be seen to be a credible entity, and from a news perspective, we must work very hard, and we must earn the trust; we must earn it."
He also encouraged the shareholders to always support the national broadcasters to be able to fulfil their mandates.
"The shareholder must support nbc financially because the current structure that exists is linked to being supported 100% by government, as this states the support we are getting is 78% and differs year to year. If we bring our own on a good year, it drops to 78%, and on any given good year, we generate about N$100 million on our own, but it is not enough to run the business. On paper you need at least up to N$420 million to be able to do our business. We must go to areas that do not have any commercial value, go and set up and do business, and it's expensive."
All in all, Similo described his tenure of 10 years at the helm of nbc's leadership as a successful journey.
