The Kavango West Region has recorded 221 new HIV infections over the past year, with seven of those cases reported at Mpora Clinic.
The figures were shared by the region's Health Director, Fransiska Hamutenya, during a belated World AIDS Day commemoration held at Mpora Combined School in the Ncamagoro Constituency.
Hamutenya said the region maintains an HIV prevalence rate of 8,2% in the 15 to 49 age group.
Young women aged 15-24 continue to experience higher infection rates, and Hamutenya attributes this to socio-economic vulnerabilities.
Despite the challenges, the region has achieved significant milestones in HIV treatment and care.
Currently, 7,469 patients are on treatment, representing coverage of 96%.
He added that viral load suppression rates stand at 97%.
The Health Director, Hamutenya, highlighted that Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake between July and September 2025 reached 394 cases region-wide.
The Ncamagoro district recorded 162 cases, the Nkurenkuru district 232 cases, and the Mpora Clinic 11 cases.
However, stigma and discrimination remain significant barriers to HIV prevention and treatment efforts.
She said too many individuals still test late, and too many fear seeking treatment due to judgement.
Hamutenya stressed that ending AIDS is not just a medical task but rather a social and moral duty.
The region plans to strengthen HIV prevention services, ensure accessible testing at all health facilities, support consistent access to treatment, and empower communities to lead awareness campaigns.
Hamutenya also called for addressing gender-based violence and economic vulnerability as key factors that heighten HIV infection risks, particularly among young women.
