Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi has officially commissioned the ongoing assembly of the floating bridge at Shingunguma Primary School in the Ongenga Constituency of the Ohangwena Region.

The floating bridge will ensure safe passage for learners crossing the floodplain, or oshana, to and from school, especially during the rainy season.

Shingunguma Primary School closed in March due to heavy rainfall this year, but will now be able to resume classes next week once the floating bridge has been fully installed.

Teaching and learning at the school are disrupted every year as it is forced to close when the oshana becomes impassable.

Plans are also underway to construct a similar floating bridge at Onghala Combined School in the Engela Constituency of the same region, which is also subject to annual closures due to flooding.
