Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, has said tariffs imposed on them by the United States would only have a positive impact on ties between China and Namibia.

The Chinese ambassador said the increase in tariffs by the US was a typical act of economic bullying by America.

He said they are well prepared once the punitive tariff hikes are implemented, as they had responded with tariff and non-tariff countermeasures to safeguard their economic rights and interests.

"The so-called reciprocal tariffs imposed by the US administration severely infringe on the legitimate rights and interests of all countries. Severely violates World Trade Organisation rules. Severely undermines the rules based on the multilateral trading system and severely disrupts the global economic order."

The ambassador reaffirmed the strong ties between China and Namibia, as the two states are still planning to work on projects that will mutually benefit both countries.

He said China strongly supports Namibia's efforts in achieving goals set in the Swapo Party manifesto and is looking forward to having more agricultural products from Namibia entering the Chinese market.

Over the past 35 years, since Namibia's independence, the two countries have signed numerous agreements with positive outcomes, especially in the mining sector, which has created thousands of employment opportunities for Namibians.

"We highly appreciate the reaffirmation by the new Namibian government to deepen China-Namibia cooperation. We hope and believe that with the joint efforts of China-Namibia relations, we will achieve even greater development in the next five years and bring even bigger benefits to our two people."
