Kuvukiland residents in Tsumeb are raising concerns over the size of new plots allocated to them as part of a relocation process to pave the way for infrastructure development.

After years of calls for service delivery, the Tsumeb Municipality has begun constructing an access road, which requires some residents to be moved.

However, those being relocated say the new plots are too small to accommodate their families and existing structures.

“The space that I have right now is three times bigger than what we received from the municipality. I live with my nephew, kids and my brother — we are not going to fit on the other side,” said resident Phillipus Hamukwaya.

Another resident, Manie Gabeb, added: “I'm willing to relocate but only with two houses, and leave the others. The space is just too small on the other side, their plot is small.”

Eddy Guiom also voiced his frustration: “This road is 12 meters, and a car is 5.6 meters wide — a car can fit there. The councilor and the mayor are giving us difficulties in Tsumeb.”

But the municipality says the relocation is necessary.

“People that have to move are ones affected by the access road. They are not being chased away — that should be the understanding. They are only being relocated and given those plots that they are referring to as small,” said Acting CEO of the Tsumeb Municipality, Frans Enkali.

He emphasized that plot allocation is not meant to accommodate extended family dwellings.

“When applying for a plot, one does not apply with the aim of having space for others to construct their houses in the same plot.”

Enkali added that refusal to relocate would stall development.

“How do you take development to a location where you don't know where to start and where to end? They need water, electricity, roads and sewer lines — all those services that we are providing as a municipality. That community of Kuvukiland, they need it.”

Residents with concerns over space have been encouraged to visit the municipality offices for assistance.
