Poverty is considered the main contributing factor to criminal activities among young people in rural communities.

Speaking at a community meeting at Usakos, Erongo Police Commander Nikolaus Kupembona said that with limited access to education, employment, and social support, many youths are pushed towards unlawful behaviour as a means of survival.

Commissioner Kupembona said the lack of opportunities, coupled with economic hardships, often leaves young people vulnerable to influence by criminal networks.

Therefore, he advocates for strong cooperation between the police and the community in combating crime.

He highlighted the police's constitutional duty to maintain law and order, stressing that public safety is a shared responsibility.

He urged residents to support the police through community policing forums, neighbourhood watch groups, and crime reporting.

He emphasised the dangers of alcohol abuse, domestic violence, and poor parenting, especially for minors exposed to unsafe environments.

Shebeen owners and drivers were reminded to follow regulations, and all citizens were encouraged to respect human rights and uphold moral values.

The mayor of Usakos, Irene Simeon-Kurtz, stressed the importance of community safety, stating that every resident deserves to feel secure in their home and neighbourhood.

However, she expressed concern that this is not the current reality in Usakos and surrounding areas, where rising crime continues to undermine public confidence and well-being.
