As part of its ongoing stakeholder engagement tour in northern Namibia, the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) management team paid a courtesy visit to the Ongandjera Traditional Authority, where they were received by Omukwaniilwa Johannes Mupiya.
Omukwaniilwa Mupiya commended NBC for its continued efforts in disseminating crucial information to the public.
He emphasised the importance of the broadcaster's role in preserving and promoting national identity and keeping citizens informed.
Omukwaniilwa briefed the NBC delegation about the roles and responsibilities of traditional authorities in maintaining cultural values and social order within their jurisdictions.
Mupiya supported the sentiment expressed by NBC Head of Sport Sacky Shikufa regarding the inclusion of traditional sports on television as a way to preserve cultural heritage.
They noted that many rural sports activities are neglected and rarely featured on national television.
The NBC delegation was also urged to increase coverage of the San communities living in deep rural areas like Amarika to advocate for their living conditions to be improved.
Stakeholders appealed for more stories that highlight their challenges and promote educational and developmental support for San children.
Senior traditional leaders voiced frustrations over the difficulty of accessing NBC’s live phone-in programs, calling for more inclusive communication channels.
They suggested that all eight traditional authorities in the region be allocated dedicated radio slots to announce their traditional-related community matters.
