President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah paid tribute to the late former Chief of the Namibian Defence Force, Solomon Hawala, saying his legacy will forever be etched in the annals of Namibia’s history, serving as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom.
Hawala died on Monday, aged 89.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah, in a statement, said the wisdom of the late Lieutenant-General Hawala, his humility and his unwavering commitment to national unity and socioeconomic development in independent Namibia were appreciated.
She said these traits serve as an inspiration for future generations.
“As we memorialise the life of this iconic figure of the Namibian revolution, we celebrate a life spent in pursuit of freedom, peace, unity and prosperity for all Namibian people and beyond,” said Nandi-Ndaitwah in a statement.
The late Hawala served in several positions, including second Assistant Commander to the Army and Deputy Commander of the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN).
After independence, he served as NDF Army Commander from 1990–2000 and Chief of Defence from 2000–2006.
The late Hawala was also a member of the Swapo Party’s Central Committee and Politburo, as well as a representative of the party in Zambia.
The President also extended condolences to Hawala’s family, friends and comrades.
