Okahandja Police Station has a new commander, Tjarimba Mathais. This follows the retirement of David Scott, who served the community in that post for the past three years.
Mathias served in the police for 18 years.
He previously served as the sub-divisional head for coordination and compliance at the Traffic Law Enforcement Division in Windhoek for six years.
Addressing the community, Chief Inspector Mathias noted that he was aware of the many problems faced by the residents, adding that he was more than ready to serve them to the best of his ability.
"I will serve as a team leader, and I want to remind you that the mandate of the Namibian police is to maintain law and order, preserve internal security, investigate alleged offences, prevent crimes, and protect the lives and property of citizens. That goes along with the core values."
He noted that, while capable of the task, he will require the full support of the community.
He thus urged them not to shy away from pointing out criminal elements and cooperating with law enforcement towards their own safety and security.
I want to emphasise that the police organisation will be effective only when it receives the necessary support from the community. When I am there to protect your life, when I am there to protect your properties, without your support, it will not work. We need the full support of any nature from the community. Policing in partnership with the community is the best strategy found worldwide."
Mathias said he will arrange regular engagements with the residents to hear their concerns and assist as best he can in solving all crime matters.
