The Executive Director in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Nghidinua Daniel, reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring every Namibian has access to a legal identity.

Daniel said this during the commemoration of International Identity Day today, marked under the theme "My Identity, My Umbrella"—legal identity for all through comprehensive civil registration.

TThe event was marked by a community engagement session, during which the public posed questions to officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security.

"Today, as we celebrate the fourth year since our official recognition of this day, we affirm Namibia's commitment to this cause and towards the global adoption of the day at the United Nations General Assembly. The ID Day serves as a mobilisation tool, a moment to pause and reflect on three interconnected pillars: one, inclusion; two, protection; and three, empowerment."

Katutura Central Constituency councillor Rodman Katjaimo urged the ministry to consider providing free identification documents, particularly for the most vulnerable communities.

"It is not their fault when their houses burn down, and they cannot afford an ID. I humbly appeal to the ministry to reconsider waiving these fees for their most vulnerable residents. Let us not allow financial hardship to be a barrier to humanity."

International Identity Day is observed globally to emphasise the importance of identity in accessing services, protecting rights, and fostering social inclusion.
