The fires in Etosha National Park are nearly fully contained.

Only four areas in the National Park currently have active fires, which are not extensive.

While tourists continue to visit the Etosha National Park for its scenery and wildlife, a team of committed Namibian Defence Force personnel, joined by a team from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism and community members, are hard at work putting out the fires.

The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Indileni Daniel, flew over the park to assess the situation.

Returning from that flight, Minister Daniel said she is pleased with the progress made in fighting the fire, noting it might be fully contained by Tuesday.

"The fire is now contained, and there were no visible fires as we flew over, but yes, there are some places that they've got fire in, of which some of them already have people on the ground, and they are monitoring. As you might be aware, people normally fight fire in the evenings, so they are monitoring, and where it's necessary, like to burn a big fire, it's happening just to control the fire. That is one of the systems. They control all the methods, they control the fire."

The places with minor active fires are the Okondeka-Mbari-Ekuma Corridor, the Scorpion Belt-Uutsatima area and the Charisaub area.

Another active fire, which is outside Etosha, is at Omutambogomaue in the Omusati Region, entering the Shushona Conservancy.

The number of animals killed in the fires is yet to be determined.
