The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) and the Communication Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) signed a collaboration agreement reaffirming the importance of fostering informed citizen participation and democratic governance.
The MoU was signed in Windhoek today.
Through this partnership, the ECN and CRAN aim to enhance electoral processes and ensure transparency, credibility and accountability in election campaigns.
The key areas of cooperation include sharing information, timely responses to regulatory and electoral challenges, and collaborative initiatives to support democratic processes.
Peter Shaama, the Chief Electoral & Referenda Officer at ECN, said, "Therefore, this MoU will establish a framework for collaboration between our two institutions, enabling us to share vital information, resources, and expertise. By working together, we aim to enhance timely outreach of electoral information and ensure that all Namibians, regardless of their location or background, have access to the information they need to participate fully in electoral democracy, as well as align the political party code of conduct to CRAN's Broadcasting Code for the media."
CRAN's Chief Executive Officer, Emilia Nghikembua, noted that the agreement will ensure collaboration in the implementation of the Broadcasting Code of Conduct for licensees, which codifies practices governing the broadcast of election coverage and political advertisement.
She said the partnership, therefore, among others, exemplifies their collective dedication to fostering cooperation and capacity building in promoting transparency.
"Our collaboration will also facilitate the timely exchange of data and research, support innovative communication strategies, and ensure regulatory clarity that benefits all Namibians."
