New members of the National Council (NC) are undergoing an induction workshop to introduce them to their new roles within the house of review.
National Council Secretary Tousy Namiseb highlighted the functions of being a National Council member, saying the most important is lawmaking.
"Your task is to go to ask the Ministry responsible for road infrastructure. Funds were distributed to you. Did you connect the people? Are people connected to health centres? Can they access markets? Honourable members, you must ask the minister responsible for education why some children must walk more than 10 kilometres every morning, exposing the girl child to dangers. These are the small but extremely big things, honourable members, that will make change in our lives; we must equalise. We must level the playing field. Some children cannot wait on a hungry stomach for this long and walk back in the hot sun. And we expect the same results."
Women make up a small number of the National Council at only 16%, or 7 out of the 42 members.
This represents a slight increase from 14% previously.
Namiseb also revealed that the National Council now comprises 74% new members.
National Council Chief Counsel for Legal Services, Wilmary Tsamareb, addressed members on the importance of taking an oath or solemn affirmation and the procedure for election of the National Council Chairperson and Vice Chairperson.
