Kavango East Swapo Party Councillor Andreas Jikerwa has been sworn in as the Mayor of Rundu, deputised by Regina Nekare, also from the same party.
During the swearing-in ceremony on Friday, Joseph Kamakende and Fransiska Hausiku, as well as Reginald Ndara of the Swapo Party, took an oath as members of the management committee and chairperson, respectively.
Patrick Kufuna of Affirmative Repositioning (AR) and Marcelius Mukuve of Rundu Urban Community's Association (RUCA) will serve as the committee's ordinary members.
In his acceptance speech, Jikerwa promised to serve diligently.
"The trust you have placed in me through your votes and your unwavering support is a mandate I do not take lightly. I pledge to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to the progress, prosperity and well-being of our beloved town."
Jikerwa assured those in attendance that the new leadership will strive to improve the living standards of the residents, strengthen the local economy, create new opportunities for the youth and ensure that every voice is heard in the decision-making process.
"This team, in front of everyone, will strive for good governance, efficiency, transparency, and accountability and mainly focus on the core values of the Council. We will explore avenues for economic expansion, drawing inspiration from regions known for their natural beauty and cultural heritage to potentially boost tourism and local businesses. In addition, we will work tirelessly to improve our town's infrastructure, from roads and public services to the essential sectors of education and healthcare."
