Namibia Correctional Services Commissioner General Raphael Hamunyela has emphasised that the institution is hard at work to bridge the skills gap between new intakes in key positions and top officials.

The aim is to equip officials with skills to improve administration and rehabilitation programmes.

Commissioner General Hamunyela was speaking at the closing of a two-day Strategic Leadership and Management Session in Regiments Settings workshop at Lucius Sumbwanyambe Mahoto Correctional Service Training College at Omaruru.

Hamunyela said there is a need for all key role players to understand their duties and be molded to make decisions that are within the confines of the laws.

"The key challenge facing the NCS is decision-making. A leader must not only make decisions but also ensure that those decisions are lawful and appropriate. This requires carefully assessing the situation, understanding the importance of the decision, and determining how, when, and to whom it should be implemented. Effective leadership depends on sound judgment, legal awareness, and timely execution."

The workshop also focused on organisational culture that supports culture, administrative law, corruption and inmate abuse in correctional facilities, and factors contributing to stress and burnout among case management.

First Gentleman Epaphras Ndaitwah at the event said a leader must share a sense of purpose, align with organisational goals, and create synergies to be able to advocate visions and missions.

The workshop was attended by senior, middle management, and support staff.
