The Otjozondjupa Region hosted a memorial service for the late parliamentarian James Uerikua and his son, Venturo Uerikua, on Saturday in Otjiwarongo.

The service provided an opportunity for residents to bid farewell to their former governor.

Uerikua served as governor for five years before proceeding to be a Member of Parliament.

As the family and mourners received the remains of Uerikua and Venturo, there was a cloud of grief.

Both died in a car crash over the Easter holiday.

Former First Lady Monica Geingos was among the mourners, joining political leaders, friends, and the community Uerikua once led.

They paid tribute to a life of public service, describing him as a brilliant leader.

Geingos noted that mourning Uerikua provides a moment of reflection for leaders about the impact of public service.

Former Kunene Governor and close friend of the late Uerikua, Marius Sheya, spoke on behalf of his friends.

Sheya highlighted Uerikua's contribution to the region and its people.

He said Uerikua maintained a close relationship with the Otjozondjupa community even after becoming a parliamentarian.

Ombara Sam Kambazembi of the Kambazembi Traditional Authority said that at the age of 43, Uerikua had already made his mark, contributing to both the region and the country's development during his lifetime.

The Swapo Party Information and Mobilisation Officer for the Otjozondjupa Region, Elizabeth Shinana, described Uerikua as a leader who united people and served communities.

Former Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council and Member of Parliament, Marlayn Mbakera, added that Uerikua is remembered not only for his position but also for his interactions with people.

Otjozondjupa Governor John |Khamuseb also paid tribute, saying Uerikua served the region with dedication.
