Former Wato FM Regional Manager Kosmas Muyenga described his time at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) as inspiring, fulfilling, progressive and, to an extent, emotional.

Muyenga retired last month after 39 years of service.

"Extremely patient," "exemplary leader," "great team player," and "fashionable mentor" were just some of the many words that friends, colleagues, and family used to describe Muyenga.

Muyenga spent close to four decades at Wato FM, starting as a cadet announcer, producer and translator, ultimately making his way to become head of the station.

It was a childhood dream to work at NBC, which eventually came true. Muyenga has seen the national broadcaster transform over the years, from the highs of nation-building to the lows brought on by industrial action.

"NBC is not only about broadcasting; it is about life, it's about experiences, and it's about actual events that are happening. There were good times and bad times at NBC as well. The core thing is, despite our differences as individuals, we should really be guided by the mandate of the NBC, which is to inform, educate, and entertain and, importantly, also to preserve peace; we should not take peace for granted, which is very, very important."

The retiree says NBC provided him with experiences, from training opportunities to travelling the world and even paying for his studies, amongst many others.

Muyenga stated that, although the institution has expanded in terms of viewership, applications, platforms, policy guidelines, and support, the national broadcaster continues to achieve significant results despite its limited resources.

Head of Radio Services, Suoma Negumbo, said, "Each role he held was more than just a title; it was a responsibility he carried with integrity, professionalism and pride... He was not only dedicated to excellence in his own work but also to uplifting those around him."

Asked about his plans while enjoying retirement, Muyenga said he will shift his attention to some leisure activities while serving at his church.
