The Upstream Petroleum Unit has clarified that positioning the Unit under the Presidency is a deliberate and strategic decision aimed at enhancing governance within Namibia's emerging oil and gas sector.
Its Head, Kornelia Shilunga, said the decision reflects the national importance of recent oil and gas discoveries, which have the potential to significantly transform Namibia's economy and global standing.
The move, she said, aligns with national development priorities by enabling central coordination, reducing fragmentation, and ensuring policy harmonisation.
Shilunga added that it supports timely decision-making, improves efficiency and strengthens transparency and accountability.
She also noted that the arrangement aims to safeguard Namibia's petroleum resources, maximising benefits for current and future generations.
"By anchoring the Unit in the Presidency, there is a direct line of oversight and accountability. It is our hope that this enhances public confidence that the sector is being managed with the seriousness, integrity and transparency that it demands," she said. "The 8th Administration remains very committed to this and is best placed to ensure that negotiations, agreements and policy directions are firmly anchored in national interest."
Shilunga stressed that Namibia's oil and gas industry's success will depend not only on resource availability but also on strong institutions, effective governance, and clear communication.
