Police in the Zambezi Region is involving traditional authorities to minimise stock theft through.

The police have reported a case of stock theft involving 678 cattle that occurred between 2025 and 2026 along Namibia's borders with Botswana and Angola, specifically in February.

In recent events, the police intercepted 25 cattle from Botswana in Omega 2.

Eight Zambian nationals were also arrested in a separate incident involving stock theft.

The selling price of one herd is N$5,000 compared to N$13,000 when sold in Zambia.

Zambezi Police Commander Andreas Shilelo then says unsecure borders and lack of manpower and resources limit the police and prevent them from setting up permanent camps along the border, in addition to poor networks.

Commissioner Shilelo says the absence of Zambian police along the 120 kilometres has also presented a challenge.

A consultative meeting was held with the Mafwe and Mashi traditional authorities in affected areas, and it has resolved to form a team to engage the Zambian counterparts.

The police also advised farmers to ensure that at least one local person is present at each cattle post for control.
