Conducting elections amid violence, unresolved disputes and uncertainty regarding compliance would have risked producing a contested outcome and further instability within the National Youth Council.
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Dino Ballotti, announced in the National Assembly, at the backdrop of the National Youth Council General Assembly, which ended without new leadership.
Ballotti said during the opening of the National Assembly, both Vice President Lucia Witbooi and the Minister of Education, Sanet Steenkamp, called on delegates to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with democratic values.
Events, however, unfolded contrary to those expectations.
Proceedings were disrupted by incidents of violence and disorder, which resulted in injuries to several young people attending the Assembly.
"Violence can never be accepted as a means of resolving disagreements in a democratic society. It is particularly troubling when such conduct occurs within a forum established to advance the interest and aspirations of Namibia's youth. The ministry condemns these events in the strongest possible terms. Compounding these developments was the resignation of the Election Committee in the early hours of the morning of the 21st of June, Sunday."
PDM MP Inna Hengari and Swapo MP Ephraim Nekongo made their contribution to the statement.
"I don't know whether it is intentional or deliberate or by accident that we become conceited players of young people. And by 'conceited players', generally, it really refers to your dealer when you operate in a mafia state. In that, we assume automatically this position that either we are leading or we are leaders of a particular generation without a mandate."
"Now that the General Assembly is caught off guard, I'm hoping that perhaps you are. How long will it take for the ministry then to respond to those issues, allegations that were laid upon them, especially the issue of compliance and the issue of young people who were just taken from the 'cuca shop' and then let go to the General Assembly when they do not come from the organisations that are affiliated with the organisation?"
Ballotti said the elections for the new leadership will continue with no date set yet.
