The Rehoboth Town Council is preparing to reopen the Reho Spa after years of closure.

The facility, once a popular tourist attraction, is undergoing extensive renovations aimed at boosting tourism, creating jobs and generating revenue for the municipality.

After 16 years of neglect, the Reho Spa is being revived.

The town mayor, Jacky ≠Khariseb, told NBC News that the rehabilitation of the Reho Spa is part of the council's local economic development programme.

The project is being implemented in phases with the support from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development (MURD).

The first phase included the renovation of the swimming pools, while the second phase will be the upgrading of accommodation facilities.

"Now it's seven bungalows that we renovated. We're just awaiting some of the furniture for the bungalows to be put in, and then we'll apply to the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) to start off the accommodation facilities. Otherwise, we would. There's also the phase three, which would include the hot spring, but that was the star attraction for our spa. So when we completed phase one, we handed in an accountability report to the ministry, and based on that, we were given funds for phase two."

The Council says the long-term vision includes restoring the site's famous hot spring spa, which was once the main attraction component for visitors.

"So we are expecting a very big inflow of revenue in terms of gate fees, in terms of prior areas being rented out, and in terms of the bungalows. So that will supplement our funds very much and the history of this place. There are so many people that grew up in Rehoboth, and this place holds so much history for them. And you'd see on our social media how much interest the people are showing in terms of when you are opening."

More than 100 people benefited from contracts and subcontracting opportunities.

The council says lessons from previous management challenges have informed a new approach focused on accountability, regular oversight and staff training.
