Omaheke Governor Pijoo Nganate says the regional government is actively investing in sports infrastructure and grassroots initiatives, positioning sport as a primary vehicle to drive youth development across the region.

The governor made the remarks while delivering his State of the Region Address in Gobabis.

Governor Nganate emphasized that sport continues to play a transformative role in promoting youth development, fostering social cohesion, and inspiring regional pride throughout Omaheke.

During his address, Nganate highly commended the Omaheke football and netball teams for their exceptional representation of the region at the 2026 Namibian Newspaper Cup.

"Sports remain a vital tool for youth development, social cohesion and regional pride," Governor Nganate stated. "I am pleased to report that both the Omaheke football and netball teams represented our region at the 2026 Namibian Newspaper Cup. The teams displayed teamwork and determination, showcasing the talent within our constituencies."

The governor also highlighted the government's concrete commitment to expanding the region's sports infrastructure, aiming to provide local athletes with modern facilities.

"To that end, Tallismanus and Otjinene have been identified for the construction of regional stadiums, with a budget of N$10 million per field," Nganate explained. "This presents an opportunity for our athletes to develop while bringing communities together through sport. Groundbreaking ceremonies for both facilities took place in mid-March 2026. Topographical surveys, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), land surveys and architectural drawings have been completed for both sites."

Nganate noted that construction at the Tallismanus Sports Facility is steadily progressing, with the installation of perimeter fencing now completed. Preparations are actively underway for the next phase of construction, following the finalization of contractor recommendations and official contract documentation.

Beyond expanding physical infrastructure, the region remains dedicated to nurturing talent at the foundational level through sustained investments in grassroots sport. Highlighting this commitment, the Epukiro Constituency recently donated netball kits and a school flag valued at more than N$7,500 to Omuhaturua Primary School, a gesture aimed at directly supporting and elevating school sport development for future generations.
