Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge has urged young people to embrace leadership with integrity and a spirit of service, saying they are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but the leaders of today.

Speaking at the Oshana Regional Conference of the Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO) at Ongwediva, where delegates gathered to elect a new regional executive committee, Iipinge said the decisions young people make today, the values they uphold, and the leadership they demonstrate will shape the Namibia that future generations will inherit.

The governor said he was encouraged to see student leaders coming together to renew their leadership mandate through a democratic process.

He emphasised that leadership renewal is not simply about changing office-bearers but about strengthening democracy.

"Do not allow tribalism, regionalism, or personal attacks to find space within student politics. Instead, elect leaders based on character, competence, commitment, and their willingness to serve others. The habits you develop in student leadership today will become the political culture of our country tomorrow."

Every election presents an opportunity to reflect, evaluate performance and elect leaders who possess integrity, vision, discipline and a genuine desire to serve.

As delegates elected a new regional executive committee, Iipinge reminded them that leadership is about responsibility rather than popularity.

He cautioned students against voting based on friendship or allowing campaigns to be characterised by intimidation and division.

"If you are elected into leadership, remember that every position carries responsibility before it carries privilege. A true student leader listens before speaking. A true leader builds unity instead of conflict. A true leader solves problems instead of creating them. Leadership is measured not by titles but by impact."

Student leaders should thus not vote because someone is their friend, and neither should they campaign through intimidation or division.

Iipinge reminded them that true leadership is rooted in service and, throughout history, leadership has existed to serve people, not to rule over them.

Stephanus Shilumbu was then elected as Chairperson, deputised by Mwanyangapo Nuukali as Vice Chairperson, Epiphania Hashipala as Secretary, and Monica Gebhard on Finance, and Johanna Ashimbanga was elected to the Political and Internal Affairs role.

They also elected those responsible for gender, ICT, education, sports and an additional member.
