Giving an update on the wildfire that occurred in 2025 at Etosha National Park, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism Indileni Daniel reported that 37% of the vegetation was lost, and 12 animals died in the blaze.

She noted that, despite the wildfire, wildlife populations have shown remarkable resilience and have significantly increased over the past year.

Daniel was responding to a question from IPC MP, Roderick Likando, who sought clarity on what steps the ministry was taking to restore wildlife habitats.

She stated that two weeks after the fire, new spring grass grew in the area, providing grazing land for wildlife.

Daniel stated that tourism infrastructure had not been damaged during the wildfire.

The minister also responded to why the ministry required assistance from the defence force, conservancy rangers and local volunteers to control the fire.

"Fires necessitate a national response. Therefore, it cannot be left solely to the ministry staff; a national approach is required. Due to the magnitude of the situation, external support became essential. The involvement of the Namibian Defence Force and the local community, along with the private sector during these incidents, is lawful and appropriate. It is entirely suitable and is always properly coordinated."

She added that what occurred in 2025 was a reminder of the power of nature and the growing threat of climate change.

Daniel also expressed her gratitude to everyone who assisted the ministry in extinguishing the fire.
