Khorixas Mayor Lesley Awaseb has observed that the delivery of housing and land for residents is progressing steadily in the town.

Awaseb noted that, despite facing financial challenges, the council has successfully rolled out services and is continuing its plans to upgrade the informal settlement with essential amenities.

The council has successfully facilitated the construction of 30 social houses through the Build Together and Shack Dwellers programmes. Additionally, it is currently servicing land at Extension 9, designated for middle-income earners.

"We have initiated the Build Together programme, and so far, we have commenced the construction of four houses using the council trust fund. We are also in the process of recommending the construction of ten additional houses through this programme. The council currently has 800,000 available for this initiative, although we are facing significant financial challenges. The Shack Dwellers Federation is collaborating effectively with us, and as a result, 15 houses have already been built."

Over 1000 residents are on the waiting list.

Awaseb said the council has also addressed the wastewater spillage in different locations that has affected the town for over 25 years.

"The council has addressed the sewer systems in the Donkerhoek informal settlement, specifically in Extensions 11 and 12, which are currently 90% complete. In the Xuas location, wastewater had been flowing openly through the streets for approximately 20 to 25 years, creating an unhealthy environment for the community. The council requested funding from the central government, which allocated N$1.8 million for the Xuas sewerage system, and this project has now been completed."

The mayor, however, indicated the need for funding for booster pumps to help pump water to informal settlements affected by low pressure.

On road networks, Awaseb said street gravelling and maintenance are also ongoing under the Road Fund Administration's financial assistance.
