President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says Namibia’s clean energy transition must deliver jobs, expand electricity access and drive industrial development, rather than focus solely on emissions reduction.

She addressed the UN Compact Private Sector Forum hosted by Secretary-General António Guterres, outlining Namibia’s energy priorities on Sunday.

Nandi-Ndaitwah underlined that reliable and affordable energy is crucial for rural healthcare, business growth and tackling poverty.

She said developing countries need room to industrialise while pursuing climate commitments, with Namibia advancing a diversified energy system and a mixed energy policy.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Guterres said Africa holds 16% of the world’s solar resources but receives only 2% of global clean energy investment.

He urged businesses to mobilise capital and technology, including artificial intelligence, for the renewable energy transition.

The UN Chief, however, cautioned that artificial intelligence could intensify demand for electricity, water and land and called for responsible use.
