Ghana's President, John Mahama, has removed the country's Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.

Chief Justice Peter Shivute on Tuesday endorsed the expanded use of plea bargaining and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms in the country’s legal system, stating that they are necessary to reduce court backlogs and improve access to justice.

Chief Justice Peter Shivute has underlined the critical role of academic work in the justice system and its contribution to the development of jurisprudence.

Shivute delivered a key note address at the launch of several influential works by Dr. Marvin Awarab. 

Chief Justice, Peter Shivute says it has been a challenge for the Judicial Service Commission to fill crucial vacancies at the courts owing to a shortage of funds.
