Namibia's Heritage Week 2026 is underway at Opuwo, but beyond the celebrations, the week carries a deeper message about identity and responsibility.

The Urban and Rural Development Minister, James Sankwasa, officiated the handover ceremony recently aimed at providing decent shelter to the local community.

The Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, has inaugurated three schools in the Kunene Region.

The government spent over N$70 million on these as well as extra classrooms, ablution facilities, and other infrastructure at nine other schools in the region.

As Namibia observed the Genocide Remembrance Day through decentralised commemorations across the country, community members in Opuwo joined leaders in reflecting on the legacy of the 1904-1908 genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama people. 

Forty-nine pre-primary teachers in Kunene Region graduated after completing a 10-month training under the School Readiness Initiative project. The ceremony took place in Opuwo.
