Elderly residents of Impalila Island in the Zambezi Region celebrated the belated International Day of Older Persons organised by an NGO, Hope of Life.

In appreciation for older persons' contribution to society, Hope for Life distributed mattresses and blankets. 

Senior citizens whose government social grant is their only source of income continue to bear the burden of caring for family members. 

However, the household of Kapango Kapango, a resident of Fumbe Village in the Kavango East Region, is worse off than many others and is in a sorry state.

The Mariental Municipality has written off municipal debts amounting to over N$1.2 million owed by senior citizens.

The decision follows a council resolution taken at an ordinary meeting held in September.
