Speaker of the National Assembly, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, motivated a budget allocation of over N$140 million for the National Council for the 2025/2026 financial year.

The allocation includes an additional N$12 million aimed at strengthening the Council’s operational readiness, particularly as it prepares for the arrival of new members following this year’s Regional and Local Authority Elections.

The additional funding will cover an amount of N$2 million for the induction of incoming councillors, N$6 million for the acquisition of new official vehicles, and N$1.3 million to enhance safety and security within the National Council.

The institution will allocate N$750,000 to upgrade its internet bandwidth and N$2.6 million to cover the separation benefits of contract employees.

In a stride toward modernisation, the National Council announced the successful completion of the first phase of its capital project, which was the installation of a new digital system in its chamber.

However, the Council’s ambitions for the second phase, which involves upgrading all conference rooms, face a budgetary shortfall.

Of the initially projected N$4 million, only N$1 million has been proposed for the current financial year.

The Speaker said the NC remains hopeful that full funding will be considered to complete the modernisation of its facilities.
