The International University of Management (IUM) has hosted its inaugural Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Day, under the theme "Fostering Purpose-Driven Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship for National Development and International Engagement".
The event was held simultaneously across IUM campuses in Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Eenhana, Ongwediva and Nkurenkuru, bringing together students, researchers, entrepreneurs, government representatives and private-sector stakeholders.
Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation, Charles Makanyeza, says research, innovation and entrepreneurship are critical in addressing Namibia's socio-economic challenges.
"The main objective of this event is to share practices that can empower students, staff, and the wider community by raising awareness of contribution to local, national, and international development through research, innovation, and entrepreneurship."
In a speech delivered on behalf of IUM Founder David Namwandi, he challenged the university to strengthen its focus on research that responds directly to national challenges and translates knowledge into practical solutions and economic opportunities.
"The research, innovation, and entrepreneurship day is not just an academic event; it is a platform for ideas, solutions, partnerships, and enterprise creation to generate innovative products for the socio-economic development and growth of our country."
The event featured exhibitions and presentations showcasing research, innovations and entrepreneurial initiatives by IUM students and staff, while creating opportunities for networking, collaboration and potential funding.
In a keynote address delivered on behalf of Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Fenny Tutjavi emphasised the need to translate research and ideas into practical solutions, enterprises and jobs.
"Government remains committed to promoting equitable, inclusive and high-quality education, skills development, research, innovation and stronger partnerships across our national innovation ecosystem. But national transformation cannot be achieved by government alone. It requires coordinated action from every sector represented in this room."
The university also officially launched its IUM mobile application, aimed at strengthening digital engagement and access to university services.
IUM says the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to position the institution as a research-intensive, innovative and entrepreneurial university that contributes meaningfully to Namibia's national development.
