John Haufiku, Chief of Corporate Communications at the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, has raised concerns about the increase in pedestrian-related accidents, reporting that four to five such incidents occur each week.
Data released by the Fund in June revealed a 15% increase in pedestrian-related crashes, rising from 435 to 501.
Injuries also surged, from 406 to 464, marking a 14% rise, while fatalities jumped from 60 to 87, representing a staggering 45% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The 87 fatalities this year include toddlers, school children, older adults, and working individuals who were crossing the road, returning home, or heading to work.
The |Khomas Region has recorded the highest number of incidents, accounting for 226 crashes (45%), 226 injuries (49%), and 16 deaths (18%) of all pedestrian-related cases reported so far in 2025.
Haufiku emphasised that this trend necessitates action from all stakeholders, including drivers, local authorities, and the media.
