Omusati Governor Immanuel Shikongo highlighted some of the developmental projects undertaken in his region when he delivered the State of the Region Address at Outapi.
Shikongo mentioned the construction of a modern police station at Onheleiwa in Etayi Constituency and the rehabilitation of Okahao Police Station.
Others include the development of water infrastructure, upgrading of green schemes, and promotion of food security.
"In the Anamulenge, Ruacana, Tsandi, and Okahao constituencies, the ministry has drilled a total of 14 boreholes at the cost of N$4.8 million. Nine boreholes have been installed with solar pump systems in the constituencies of Ruacana, Okahao, Tsandi, and Onesi at a cost of N$5.5 million. 8 boreholes were rehabilitated in the constituencies of Ruacana, Okahao, and Onesi in collaboration with the Community Conservation Fund of Namibia at the cost of N$657,483.60."
Two earth dams were also excavated to harvest rainwater in the Elim and Etayi constituencies. The Onamatanga water supply project was completed, while the Iitapa-Okeehelongo rural water supply phase 2A is under construction.
Once completed, it will provide potable water to both humans and animals.
The Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform Ministry also contributed to the development of the region.
"Upgrading of the Outapi water purification plant at a cost of N$135 million. The Olushandja water purification plant received an upgrade at a cost of N$120 million. The Ogongo pump station will undergo an upgrade at a cost of N$40 million. Rehabilitation of the Calueque to Oshakati water canal at the cost of about N$90 million is near completion."
The ministry is also replacing the water pipeline between Ogongo and Oshakati for N$205 million.
Shikongo was also pleased about the creative industries, which are central to the region's response to alleviate unemployment, poverty, and inequality.
He said the government must harness the talents of the youth through the creative industries.
Local authorities were also commended for creating opportunities for and improving the livelihood of residents.
"The Okahao Town Council has renovated the old Okahao open market at the cost of N$332,000 to create new marketing opportunities and experiences for traders and consumers. Ruacana Town Council has enhanced security at its business park by upgrading the fence, which cost N$65,000."
However, crime in the region remains problematic, with 475 cases reported during 2024/2025 compared to 354 cases committed during 2023/2024.
Theft, assault, gender-based violence, and suicide are the biggest concerns.
