A 31-year-old Namibian truck driver, suspected of carrying dagga, is remanded in custody following a second brief appearance in the Gantsi Magistrates' Court in Botswana.

Mbaunguraije Kaitjirokere is yet to be asked to plead to a single count of cross-border drug trafficking crime.

The brief facts of the matter are that the accused was intercepted at Mamuno Border Post during a Botswana Police operation and was found in possession of 100 kilograms of dagga.

The truck driver was heading to South Africa, and the estimated cost of the contraband is over N$600,000.

The spokesperson of the Botswana Police Service is Near Bagali.

"The suspected drug trafficker is expected back in court on March 12. He has not been asked to plead to the charges levelled against him. There are some processes that need to be resolved. Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to divulge the processes because they form part of the ongoing police investigations. It is our hope that all the processes will have been resolved by next Thursday."

Last week, police chiefs from Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe met in Kasane, Botswana, for a three-day consultative meeting.

The meeting deliberated on cross-border criminal activities bedevilling the Southern African Development Community region.
