The Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, together with representatives from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, the Police, and other stakeholders, toured the B1 road—from under the bridge at Havana to Chinatown—on Tuesday to observe traffic flow.

The visit follows ongoing safety concerns, as pedestrians are frequently struck by vehicles while crossing or waiting to cross the busy road.

On that same day, four pedestrians were hit by a vehicle while waiting to cross. All four sustained multiple injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the situation on the ground and identify short-, medium-, and long-term solutions to reduce accidents and improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists.

Following the visit, the Minister issued a directive, and stakeholders identified an immediate short-term solution: deploying law enforcement officers to manage pedestrian movement and traffic flow.

The deployment began on Tuesday from 16:00 to 19:00 and will continue daily during peak hours—from 06H00 to 08H00 in the morning and from 16H00 to 19H00.

The MVA Fund and other stakeholders will continue engaging to develop medium- and long-term solutions. In the meantime, pedestrians and motorists are urged to adhere to instructions from law enforcement officers.

Proposed long-term measures include the construction of a pedestrian bridge, installation of surveillance cameras, and possibly building barriers to improve safety.

The area is not only prone to road accidents but has also been associated with incidents of robbery, raising further concerns among road users.
