Police at Grootfontein are investigating a case of rape and murder after the body of a 28-year-old woman was found at a dumping site in the Kaap n' Bou informal settlement on Saturday.
The incident formed part of the weekend crime report compiled by the Namibian Police.
According to police, the body of Selly Gelamgaes was found partially clothed with marks consistent with strangulation visible on her neck. Preliminary evidence suggests she may have been sexually assaulted before her death.
In a separate incident, police are searching for about nine men who allegedly raped a 25-year-old woman in Okahandja's Nau-Aib location during the early hours of Sunday morning. The victim told police she was walking home when the suspects confronted her, threatened her with knives and warned her not to scream. The suspects fled after noticing the approaching vehicle lights. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and is reported to be in a stable condition.
Road accidents also claimed lives over the weekend. On Saturday evening, two men died after a sedan collided with a truck carrying charcoal on the B2 road between Swakopmund and Arandis. The deceased were identified as 28-year-old Renaldo Raymond Beukes and 26-year-old Paolo Dominique Cloete. Police said the sedan struck the truck before bursting into flames. The truck driver sustained chest injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
In another fatal accident, a 33-year-old driver and his 17-year-old passenger died when a sedan overturned on the B1 highway, approximately three kilometres south of Rehoboth on Sunday morning. Four other passengers, aged between 15 and 18, sustained serious injuries and remain under medical care.
Drug-related offences resulted in several arrests during the reporting period. In Mondesa, Swakopmund, police arrested two men, aged 21 and 24, after they were allegedly found in possession of cannabis valued at N$36,200 during an operation. In a separate incident near Karasburg, a 52-year-old man was arrested after cannabis valued at N$48,250 was allegedly discovered during a vehicle search along the B1 road.
Police investigations into all reported incidents continue.
